Course Description
This two-part course series, provided in collaboration with IEEE Future Networks, an IEEE Future Directions initiative, covers the effects cellular networks have on society and commerce, how 5G can contribute to economies, what is needed to integrate 5G infrastructure in a 3G/4G world, and more.
The U.S. government passed a $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill in 2021 that contains $65 billion for broadband spending. Deploying 5G network infrastructure will be a major part of this effort, but most towns and cities do not have the expertise or background to assess and manage such projects.
Wireless technologies have become a fundamental part of daily life in the 21st century. They give us the ability to make efficient use of our time, connect us any time and anywhere, and make our lives better in innumerable ways. In order to function, our wireless devices need to connect to cellular sites that provide good coverage both outdoors and indoors. Keeping that critical infrastructure up to date increasingly requires the placement of sites closer to populated areas – creating new challenges for both the wireless industry and local governments. Next-generation cellular technologies will enable greater functionality, but their complexity places increasing burdens on municipalities and government agencies – including a need to understand the relevant technical terminologies that appear in applications, permitting and licensing negotiations, and deployment planning.
Course Objectives
