The Need for Distribution Automation in Power Grid Reliability | Academy on Smart Grid Virtual Event

June 2022

1 hour 6 minutes

In recent years, there have been numerous weather-related events adversely impacting the power grid. Record-breaking heat waves, extreme winter storm events causing massive electricity generation failures, hurricanes—all have caused millions of customers to be impacted and billions of dollars lost. As per the White House, weather-related blackouts cost the U.S. economy an annual average of $18 billion to $33 billion.
Various studies and reports point out that the majority of outages largely impact the distribution segment of the power grid, and 80% of outages happen at this distribution segment. But despite that fact, the major investments and spending on this segment are much less compared to the other segments. With this reduced investment and attention to distribution, as well as an older infrastructure, the distribution side of the grid will cause increased reliability issues if it is not improved with latest automation technologies.
At the same time, there is a huge gap in the skill sets and knowledge gained through school education and the skills required at a practical workplace based on the latest technologies and trends. As per a report by Human Capital Institute, 75% of Americans say schools are failing to provide an adequate 21st-century education and this could cost the US economy as much as $975 billion over the next 10 years, and G20 countries up to $11.5 trillion in GDP growth in the same time frame.
Watch the recording of this virtual event as our subject matter experts discuss the importance of paying stronger attention to these issues and the investments that need to be made to the distribution grid, as well as the workforce behind it. Learn what can be done to enhance the skills of the workforce to meet this imminent need. You’ll also get an overview of the IEEE Academy on Smart Grid Distribution Automation career development program, created to provide the fundamentals of the existing power distribution system and the advanced functionalities of distribution automation.
This webinar is ideal for professionals in the energy sector, including engineers, managers, and researchers.
